However, because computer memory is organized in powers of two, a kibibyte (KiB) equals 1,024 bytes, a mebibyte (MiB) equals 1,048,576 bytes, etc. This discrepancy often causes confusion — for example, a "500 GB" hard drive formatted by an OS using binary units appears as roughly 465 GiB.
